Spirits

The term spirit can cover quite a broad range of alcoholic beverages, from Absinthe to Zubrowka with an awful lot in between. Any alcoholic beverage with an ABV above 20% is considered a spirit. Most spirits on the market hover around the 40% ABV range, Whisky, Brandy and Vodka in particular.

Spirits are created through a process of distillation, an initial liquid is produced that will often have a lower alcohol content, this is passed through a process of distillation where the water content is lowered thus increasing the alcohol content by volume. In some cases a neutral grain spirit is produced, where grains are used to produce the alcohol content which has no strong flavour or aroma

This is used as a base for producing vodka and gin. Vodka is often measured on its purity and will go through a number of distillation processes to produce a very clean beverage, whereas Gin uses the neutral grain spirit as a foundation and botanicals are added to give a distinctive flavour profile that can include citrus fruits, exotic herbs and spices from around the world.
