Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot

Clicquot established in 1772, Philippe Clicquot owned a number of vineyards and decided to add his family name to a brand of wine, they saw success with their first shipment heading to Venice, Phillipes son took over the business in 1798, his reign was short lived however and it was in 1805 that his widow Barbe Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin took over at 27 years old, she immediately became one of the first business women in modern times. Not resting on those laurels she goes from strength to strength proving to be a real innovator, producing the first recorded vintage Champagne in 1810. By 1814 Madame Clicquot had overcome a continental trade embargo and managed to ship her product to St. Petersburg, it was very warmly met in Russia.

Keen eyed Downton Abbey fans may have spotted Veuve Cliquots signature bright yellow label as it was used in the 6th series, Ian Flemming also used Veuve as James Bond's champagne choice in at least three of his novels.
